Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president in the general election of 2023, has stated that Nigeria’s democracy is not yet mature if it is unable to bring wealth and freedom to its citizens.
In honour of Democracy Day, Atiku made this comment in a statement that was uploaded on his verified X handle on Wednesday.
Even though our current democratic system has been in place for 25 years, it would still be appropriate to honour the sacrifices made by numerous patriots, most notably Alfred Rewane, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua, and Basorun MKO Abiola and his adored wife, Alhaja (Mrs.) Kudirat Abiola.
“It is critical that all parties involved keep contributing in order to maintain the viability of our democracy.

He said, “But if our democracy keeps failing to give the people the prosperity and liberty they deserve, then it is not yet virile.”
The former vice president claims that a sequence of coalitions and alliances formed by the political leaderships of that era helped to eradicate the last remnants of military and dictatorial rule and restore power to the people. This is part of the historical timeline of the struggle that gave rise to democracy in Nigeria.
He emphasised that it was an unusual period in the history of the country and said that it is admirable that the people has witnessed an uninterrupted season of election politics for 25 years.
Atiku went on to say that democracy should be praised and honoured.
