The New Nigeria Peoples Party, or NNPP, filed a petition with the Nigeria Judicial Council, or NJC, in response to what it said unusual remarks made by one of the judges during the delivery of verdict on the Kano governorship elections against the party and its Kwankwasiyya supporters.
According to a quotation from Justice Benson Anya’s argument to the Tribunal, “it is better to use justice to stop some politicians from causing violence and banditry in Kano”
Hashimu Dungurawa, the NNPP’s state chairman for Kano, claimed that the comment was proof positive that the party was not given justice because of their case, but rather because of sentiments.
Such rhetoric, according to the NNPP stalwart, was unbecoming of a judge and supporter of the law. He passionately objected to it.
Of course, the offensive, defamatory, and downright unacceptable remarks attributed to the panel—particularly those in which Justice Benson Anya exceeded his judicial immunity and appeared to be involved in the dispute by casting aspersions on the NNPP leadership and members—are untrue, regrettable, impolite, and motivated by feelings.
“We are taking our petition to the NJC Against Justice Anya and his remarks, and we shall see whether he is right to use personal sentiments to quash our victory and also wants justice on this,” Hashimu Dungurawa stated.
