Nigerians are hopeful that approving the Nigeria Peace Corps law will get a lot of unemployed people off the streets.

This is happening at a time when debates about the nation’s unemployment rate are raging.

The alarming unemployment data that the National Bureau of data (NBS) recently issued serve as further evidence of the urgency surrounding the Peace Corps Bill.

The unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in the first quarter (Q1) of 2023.

President Buhari was presented with a variety of measures, including the well-known Nigeria Peace Corps bill, for his approval before his term ended on May 29, 2023.

This bill, proposed by Senator Ali Ndume, sought to give the Peace Corps official status as a government organisation and provide all active Peace Corps volunteers in Nigeria legal recognition.

The Peace Corps, which Dickson Akoh founded, has fervently supported initiatives aimed at empowering young people and promoting peace around the country.

The organisation has nevertheless struggled with issues related to its lack of a legal foundation and recognition as a government parastatal.

The rejection of the measure by President Buhari in 2018 marked a turning point in its development.

He was worried about both the financial strain of maintaining the institution and the potential effects on national security.

The bill was nevertheless revived in the 9th Senate, which raised hopes that it would finally win the necessary support.

However, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has failed to comment on the proposed measure since taking office.

The Peace Corps Bill, according to Fred Agbaje, “isn’t just about a group; it’s about hope for millions of young people who are out of work.” A better future might be unlocked with Tinubu’s cooperation.

Tinubu’s choice carries the weight of our aspirations, according to James Akoji. A chance for youth engagement and constructive change is provided by the Peace Corps. We implore him to grasp this chance.
