Elections for local government have been rescheduled by the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission, or JISEC, from June 2024 to June 14, 2025.

During a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday, Auwal Muhammad Harbo, the Chairman of the Commission, said this.

According to him, the decision was made in response to the Jigawa State House of Assembly’s 2012 revision to the election law, which was changed to comply with the 2022 election Act, which gives political parties 360 days to prepare.

He said, “The commission was forced to forward the request to the Jigawa State Assembly to amend the 2012 Electoral Law to conform with the 2022 Electoral Act, which provides 360 days for political parties to prepare, as opposed to the initial 90 days, due to higher demand from political parties to postpone the election.”

It is anticipated that the current local government chairmen’s terms would end in June 2024.

Before June 2025, the state government will have the chance to designate caretaker chairs thanks to the modified statute.

According to Adamu Isah Indallahi, secretary of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, the development will provide the opposition parties ample time to organise and win elections.
