Prof. Wole Soyinka, a literary giant, has advised Davido not to apologise for the controversial video he put on his social media platforms.
OBASANJONEWS24 recalls that Davido received harsh criticism after tweeting a portion of the music video for his signee, Logos Olori’s new single ‘Jaye Lo,’ which depicted people praying and dancing in front of a mosque.
The singer eventually caved to pressure and withdrew the video, but she refused to apologise.
Despite the removal of the video, some Muslims are still demanding a public apology from Davido.
A group of Muslim youngsters recently rushed to the streets of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to protest Davido, burning a big banner of the artist on fire.
However, in a statement made on Tuesday, Soyinka stated that Davido owes no apologies to Muslims.
The Nobel laureate stated that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai made offensive remarks towards Christians in the past but was never compelled to apologise.
“There was nothing to apologise for,” he remarked, referring to El Rufai’s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I completely disagree with Shehu Sani, if, as reported, he has requested an apology from Davido on behalf of the Muslim community.”
Soyinka went on to say that it wasn’t Davido’s music that led to the lynching of Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was slain by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year for suspected blasphemy.
