At the 2024 policy meeting being held by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja, it was disclosed that three individuals had attained identical scores of 367 in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), making them the top performers.

Olowu Joseph from Ondo State, Alayande David from Oyo State and Orukpe Joel from Edo state are the leading scorers.

Umeh Nkechinyere obtained the highest score in the previous year, achieving a total of 360.

To avoid a recurrence of the “Mmesoma matter” controversy, JAMB had previously resolved not to disclose the top scorer for 2024. A year earlier in 2023, Ejikeme Mmesoma – a 19-year-old learner – made false claims about scoring 362 when her actual score on JAMB’s platform was computed at just 249.

The importance of the UTME as a ranking exam for admission to tertiary institutions was underscored by Professor Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB’s Registrar. However, he emphasized that it is only one component among other criteria considered by the Board.

To prevent any possible misunderstandings or misrepresentations, JAMB is careful not to publicize the names of high achievers.
