A recent court ruling in Italy has led to the return of migrants to the country, sparking debates over immigration policies and the legal framework governing asylum seekers in Europe.
On Saturday, an Italian navy ship brought back 12 migrants to Italy from a center in Albania. This occurred after a court decision challenged the Italian government’s plan to move migrant processing operations to the Balkan country.
The migrants embarked on the Guardia Costiera vessel at Shengjin port for their journey to Italy.
Earlier this week, they were part of a group of 16 intercepted in international waters and transported to two centers in Albania.
On Friday, a court in Rome decided against detaining 12 migrants, citing safety concerns as the reason they could not be sent back to their home countries of Bangladesh and Egypt.
The controversial agreement to relocate asylum-seekers’ housing to a non-EU country has received praise from some nations, such as Italy, which are experiencing a substantial increase in migrants.
Human rights organizations have criticized the outsourcing decision, labeling it as a dangerous precedent.
