The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has strongly refuted a report circulating in certain media outlets claiming that Nigerian inmates are only provided with N200 for daily meals, instead of the approved N750 allocated by the Federal Government. Assistant Controller of Corrections and NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, dismissed the report as false, misleading, and mischievous.

Umar clarified that inmates in custodial centers throughout the country are indeed provided with the approved N750 for their meals, and this information is publicly available.

He further emphasized that vendors are paid the approved amount upon completing the supply. However, Umar acknowledged that even the approved N750 is becoming increasingly unsustainable, and the NCoS is actively seeking an upward review of the feeding allowance from the Federal Government to better reflect the current economic realities.

The NCoS statement also highlighted that the contract for ration supply is publicly disclosed, with clear conditions for interested vendors to apply in accordance with the public procurement act of 2007.

In addition, each custodial center is equipped with a ration committee that plays a supervisory role in ensuring the quality assurance of the supply, preparation, and distribution of food to inmates. This committee ensures that inmates are adequately fed within the approved budget.

Over the years, the authorities have consistently shown their dedication to improving the welfare of inmates, not only in terms of feeding but also through effective reformation and rehabilitation programs.

While the Nigerian Correctional Service is actively seeking an increase in the feeding allowance from the Federal Government to align with the current economic situation, it is important to disregard any false reports that aim to tarnish the reputation of the Service.

The public is urged to ignore these fabricated stories and rest assured of the unwavering commitment of the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, to work for the overall well-being of individuals in custody. The genuine support of well-meaning Nigerians is greatly appreciated by the NCoS.
