Two separate attacks by about 17 armed terrorists thought to be affiliated with the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, ISWAP, were successfully repelled by Multi-National Joint Task Force, MNJTF, troops stationed in Banki, Borno State, in a series of events on September 12, 2023, and September 13, 2023, respectively.

No recorded losses were suffered as a result of the united troops’ unrelenting attempts to protect Banki town.

In the northeast, Banki Town is a commercial hub that borders Nigeria and Cameroon.

The first incident happened on September 12 at around 7:23 p.m., when a gang of roughly 17 armed terrorists attempted to enter Banki town from the surrounding area, according to Lt Col. Kamarudeen Adegoke, a spokeswoman for the MNJTF.

He claimed that troops, in particular the Nigerian Battalion stationed in Banki with their Cameroonian counterparts, responded with unshakable tenacity. The insurgents were compelled to abandon their attack as a result of their tenacious defending strategies.

The terrorists launched a second, more significant onslaught in the early hours of September 13, 2023, with a greater force, which is a tribute to the vigilance and readiness of the MNJTF troops. The combined forces once more repelled the attackers and stopped any attempt to enter Banki town by remaining steady and steadfast.

These effective actions by the MNJTF troops serve as a reminder of the value of coordinating efforts and international cooperation in resolving regional security issues. The dedication of both Nigerian and Cameroonian personnel in defending Banki town against these ISWAP assaults highlights the necessity of the MNJTF’s presence in defending towns and upholding peace and security in regions impacted by extremist activities.

“It is important to note that the absence of reported casualties during these incidents is a positive outcome and underscores the professionalism and preparedness of the MNJTF troops in the face of such threats,” he said.

Further information may become available when the situation changes, throwing light on any additional steps the MNJTF and security forces may have taken to maintain the safety and stability of Banki town and the areas around it.
