The Lagos government issued a “Vacation Order” for seven days on Monday to drivers of commercial buses and cars who were working atop bridges around the state.

According to Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, the ultimatum was given because it was necessary to address any violations impeding unimpeded traffic flow on bridges throughout the state.

Hon. Giwa reported that despite numerous warnings, drivers of cars and buses operating for hire have persisted in disobeying the government’s instructions and creating major obstacles along these bridges, which has a detrimental effect on the structural integrity of the bridges and traffic.

He acknowledged that the current administration is investing a significant amount of money in building typical bus terminals and garages for commercial use around the state.

The Special Adviser stated that “every motorist/commercial bus driver operating along ‘Apongbon’ and ‘Idumota’ (Cater) Bridges, ‘Elegbata’, ‘Ebute-Ero’ and ‘Ejalonibu’ must urgently leave these areas as LASTMA would commence strict enforcement operation immediately after the expiration of this ultimatum until zero tolerance is achieved throughout the state.”

The actions of these motorists and commercial bus drivers on bridges, he continued, are in violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, as amended.

However, Hon. Sola reaffirmed that any vehicles in violation will be brought right away to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution when the ultimatum expired.

He also said that the ultimatum would start immediately on Monday, October 16, 2023.
