In response to escalating tensions, Israel has deployed troops to its northern border, raising concerns about a potential ground offensive in Lebanon. Discover the latest developments in this ongoing conflict.
Israel has moved troops to its northern border after the Israeli army said earlier this week it was preparing for a possible ground attack in Lebanon.
The move came a day after Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut. Iran’s supreme leader warned that his death “will not go unpunished.”
Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated sharply this week, leaving hundreds of people dead in Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Hundreds of families are sleeping on the streets in Beirut in the aftermath of the attack.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has long expressed concern about the fighting and warned that the world cannot afford to let Lebanon become another Gaza.
Israel has said the aim of its campaign is to ensure the safe return to northern Israel of tens of thousands of residents who have been forced from their homes as a result of Hezbollah rocket attacks. Earlier this month, Israel declared that the return of these residents to the north of the country is its official war objective.
Lebanese militant groups say their actions are in solidarity with the Palestinians and that they will not stop firing at Israel until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.
