The building used by Syrian security forces outside Damascus was reportedly targeted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), as per a security source aligned with the Syrian government cited by Reuters on Thursday evening.
The Syrian state-run SANA news agency, quoting its own security source, mentioned that eight soldiers lost their lives in the attack, with “material damage” reported on the ground without specifying the exact target.
SANA also stated that the missiles were fired from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, while the Israeli authorities have not yet issued any comments on the incident, as it is uncommon for West Jerusalem to acknowledge strikes beyond its borders.
This attack occurred amidst ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza, which is approaching its seventh month. Israel has accused Iran of supporting Hamas and pro-Palestinian groups in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon, while Tehran denies direct involvement.
Israel was accused of bombing an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus on April 1, resulting in casualties, including two generals from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
In response, Iran launched a series of drones and missiles towards Israel a week later, with the IDF reporting that most of the projectiles were intercepted, causing no fatalities in the attack.
