Axios reports that Israel destroyed a key Iranian nuclear site during airstrikes in October. This strategic move underscores the escalating conflict between the two nations as Israel continues its efforts to curtail Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The incident has sparked international discussions about regional stability and global security.
According to Axios on Friday, sources familiar with the situation reported that Israel targeted and demolished a covert nuclear weapons facility during its missile attacks on Iran in October.
According to Axios, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted the Taleghan 2 facility located within the Parchin military complex approximately 20 miles southeast of Tehran. This information was reported by three unnamed US officials as well as one current and one former Israeli official.
A former Israeli official informed the outlet that the attack obliterated “sophisticated equipment” used in manufacturing explosives for detonating nuclear devices.

According to previous US intelligence assessments, the Islamic Republic ceased its nuclear weapons program in 2003 but persisted with related research and expertise. During his first term, US President-elect Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement. In response, Tehran reduced its compliance with the accord and increased uranium enrichment activities.
Iran maintains that its nuclear research is solely for civilian use. “We have consistently stated that we are not pursuing nuclear weapons,” President Masoud Pezeshkian declared in September. “Our aim is to fulfill our technical and scientific requirements.”
On October 1, in reaction to the conflict in Gaza and the targeted killings of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel. The Israeli military reported that most of these missiles were intercepted while still airborne. A Palestinian man lost his life when a missile fragment fell in the West Bank, marking the only fatality from these strikes.
On October 25, Israel conducted strikes on Iranian military sites. According to Iranian officials, the attack resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and one security guard.
