President Ebrahim Raisi, along with his entourage including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Governor of East Azerbaijan Malek Rahmati, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Iran’s northwestern province of East Azerbaijan.
Raisi had recently visited Azerbaijan and was on his way to the border region when the incident occurred.
The crash was attributed to foggy weather conditions, which made search and rescue operations challenging.
The wreckage was eventually located with the assistance of Turkish surveillance drones. With Raisi’s untimely passing, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber is expected to assume the role of interim leader.
Raisi, a representative of the conservative wing, had a long and distinguished career in the legal field before becoming Iran’s President in 2021.
