IPU Responds to Senator Natasha’s Complaint, Vows to Hear Akpabio’s Side

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has acknowledged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating it will also consider his response before making a decision.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has committed to taking action in response to the issues highlighted by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a representative of Kogi Central in the National Assembly.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a worldwide organization focused on reinforcing national parliaments, advancing democracy, and encouraging international dialogue, made this commitment following Akpoti-Uduaghan’s presentation of her case at an IPU meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Although the specifics of her concerns have not been revealed, Akpoti-Uduaghan previously reported both her suspension from the Nigerian Senate and allegations of harassment by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the IPU.
She was suspended from the Senate on March 6 for “gross misconduct” after her altercation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements.
“Akpoti-Uduagahn stated at the IPU that she was unlawfully suspended as a senator five days ago, on March 6th, 2025, after submitting a sexual harassment petition against Senator Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Nigerian senate.”
I believed that by submitting the petition, he would step aside and allow both of us to present ourselves to the committee on ethics, privileges, and public petitions for a fair and transparent investigation.
“Regrettably, I was silenced and faced a six-month suspension along with several strict conditions, including the removal of my security detail and the confiscation of all official vehicles and other items given to me in my capacity as a senator.”
Tulia Ackson, the president of IPU, recognized the issues highlighted by Akpoti-Uduaghan and promised that the organization would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
She mentioned that the IPU would consider both perspectives on the issue before proceeding with any necessary actions.
Ackson acknowledged that Kafilat Ogbara, a Nigerian delegate and member of the House of Representatives, had requested to speak but couldn’t due to time limitations.
“I want to express that we have listened to her concerns, and in doing so, it provided us an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what she has conveyed,” said Ackson.
However, since we initially heard only her perspective, the IPU as an institution will consider all concerns raised. We intend not only to understand her side but also provide an opportunity to hear the opposing viewpoint, in line with our standard practice at IPU.
“Once we’ve heard the other side, we’ll take any necessary steps. I felt it was important to address this matter so we can then proceed accordingly.”
