After 135 years, it has developed into a genuinely worldwide organisation with 179 members from 193 different nations. The IPU enables parliaments and lawmakers to advance global peace, democracy, and sustainable development by facilitating parliamentary diplomacy.
In a statement, the Senate President’s Special Assistant for Media and Communications, Anietie Ekong, stated that Senator Akpabio had received overwhelming support from delegates worldwide to join the Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee, which has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, for a three-year term.
The National Assembly of Angola served as the host institution for the 147th IPU Assembly, which took place in Luanda, Angola, from October 21–27, 2023.
During the week-long Assembly, the Union discussed significant issues that impact countries worldwide and deliberated on ways to improve public institutions’ effectiveness, accountability, and representation; strengthen public-private partnerships; and better prepare parliaments to tackle the interconnected geopolitical, economic, and environmental crises that the world faces.
