The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group, has issued a threat to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) regarding the poor power supply in the South-East region.
In a statement released by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group called on the Chairman of EEDC, Emeka Offor, and its management to cease defrauding the people.
IPOB highlighted that residents have been forced to pay excessive and illegal estimated bills, amounting to hundreds of thousands of naira. The group demanded that EEDC provide consistent and reliable electricity in the region, warning that if the situation persists, they will be compelled to shut down EEDC offices in the South-East.
IPOB also criticized EEDC for failing to provide prepaid electricity meters and instead continuing to issue illegal estimated bills, resulting in disconnection of power supply for communities that refuse to pay these unjust charges.
The corrupt practices of the EEDC company have been brought to light by a group, who claim that the company not only charges communities for power supply, but also fails to return faulty transformers after dismantling them for repairs.
This has resulted in a lack of electricity in certain regions, hindering business and industrial activities. The group asserts that the EEDC is taking advantage of the people by providing inadequate power supply and charging exorbitant bills.
They also link the company’s debt to the Transmissions Company of Nigeria to the poor distribution of electricity in the region.
The group questions the EEDC’s ability to deliver sufficient electricity with its limited budget and accuses the company of defrauding and extorting the governors and citizens. They emphasize that the power sector is no longer a monopoly and call for the removal of the EEDC.
