IPOB Stands Firm on May 30 Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day
May 30 is Biafra Day, and the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, have insisted on celebrating it in the South-East.
According to the group, the day is designated as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the Civil War between July 6, 1967, and January 15, 1970.
This was said by the pro-Biafra organisation in a statement made public on Tuesday by Emma Powerful, the group’s media and publicity secretary.
“We want to remind everyone who lives in Biafra territory that the sit-at-home on May 30, 2024, in observance of Biafra Heroes Day, is sacrosanct and we oblige everyone to abide by this order, its only one day,” the statement read.

“In terms of Biafra Land, IPOB continues to be a crucial state actor in Biafra-related matters. No government or security agency has the right to persecute any innocent person during the commemoration of those who fought for Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty. We are calling on all of Biafra Land’s state governors to guarantee everyone’s and everything’s safety on that day.
“The Nigerian government needs to realise that we can’t stop ourselves from grieving or honouring them.
“Those who lost their lives defending our country against the British and Nigerian governments’ plans to exterminate us during the 1967–1970 war deserve to be honoured and honoured. We ought to keep honouring our heroes and heroines.
IPOB emphasised that on May 30, all activities in the South-East region are prohibited. The organisation also urged the governors of the area to ensure sufficient security for both people and property on that day.
“All social activities in Biafra Land are prohibited on this year’s Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day. The statement further stated that “markets, schools, banks, government, and private businesses are not allowed to open.”
