An investigative panel has cleared Nigerian socialite Bobrisky of allegations claiming he received special treatment while serving a prison sentence, dismissing the accusations as unfounded.
An investigative panel has concluded that there is no evidence to substantiate the allegations suggesting Idris Okuneye, widely recognized as Bobrisky, received preferential treatment or departed from prison during her six-month sentence.
On April 12, 2024, Bobrisky, a well-known Nigerian crossdresser, was sentenced for the misuse of the Nigerian naira and completed her sentence on August 5, 2024.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, initiated the investigation after a viral video was posted by controversial activist VeryDarkMan.
In the video, a voice purported to be Bobrisky’s stated that she had bribed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to dismiss money laundering charges.
Furthermore, it was claimed that a “godfather” and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, arranged for Bobrisky to serve her sentence in a private apartment instead of being incarcerated.
In response, the Minister of Interior has established a panel headed by Magdalena Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, to investigate potential corruption and misconduct within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
On Monday, Uju Agomoh, the Executive Director of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), delivered the preliminary findings to the Ministry of Interior.
The report concluded that there was no credible evidence indicating Bobrisky received any special privileges while imprisoned.
It was confirmed that she completed her entire sentence from April 12 to August 5, 2024, with the standard remission in place. These findings disprove the widely circulated online allegations of bribery and preferential treatment.
