Insecurity: Against pipeline vandals and others, the Army launches Exercise Still Waters in Bayelsa

To combat pipeline vandalism, cultism, illegal oil refining, kidnapping, and other crimes in Bayelsa, the Nigerian Army has started a security operation with the codename Exercise Still Waters III.

The exercise was officially launched on Tuesday in the state’s Otuokpoti Local Government Area, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Bayelsa’s governor, Douye Diri, praised the military for the exercise in his remarks and emphasised the need of security for good administration.

As the nation approached the holiday season and Bayelsa was prepared for an off-cycle governorship election, he expressed his appreciation for the practise.

He also praised the military’s efforts to make the state less violent and less criminal and asked them to keep taking proactive steps to keep everyone safe.

To maintain calm in Bayelsa, Diri assured security organisations of the state government’s cooperation.

He praised the Chief of Army Staff for keeping the exercise going and claimed that the success of earlier security drills had greatly helped to a peaceful holiday season in the state.

As we are all aware, our state is currently experiencing what is known as the ember months, a time when crime is more prevalent.

“In order to prevent criminal activity and, more crucially, to ensure the success of the governorship election, it is necessary to put the required systems in place.

“Since taking office, the security of our people has been a top priority, and this is the foundation of successful governance. The two eyes of our people’s sleep are closed, as I have made sure.

He continued, “I appreciate the sacrifices and devotion of our courageous forces, who have assisted in lowering crime in our state.

In his remarks, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 6th Division, stated that the exercise would concentrate on important facets of cyber warfare to fight false information spread on social media.

The GOC also said it would address other security issues that came up at the conclusion of the year.

He pledged that members of the Nigerian Army were prepared to pay any price necessary to ensure the country’s safety and security.

For their involvement in and support of the initiatives to uphold peace and security in the state, Abdussalam praised the commanders of various security units.
