INEC Rejects PDP’s Call to Remove Wike’s Cousin as Edo REC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refused to remove the Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), a relative of Nyesom Wike, despite calls from the PDP. Learn about INEC’s stance on this political dispute.
INEC has refused to comply with the request of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to relocate Resident Electoral Commissioner Anugbum Onuoha.
It is noted that Onuoha’s connection with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, has stirred controversy.
Governor Godwin Obaseki and Wike’s relationship has been strained since the latter endorsed his re-election campaign after defecting to PDP.
The PDP governor and national leadership have expressed concern that Onuoha may sway the election in favor of the APC.
Anthony Aziegbemhin, the PDP chairman of Edo State, has formally demanded that Onuoha be immediately redeployed by submitting a protest letter to Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman.

The letter stated that the bond between these two individuals was too strong to disregard, as they had similarities and were also near allies.
The Edo REC is related to the Minister of FCT, Mr. Wike as they are cousins. Additionally, during Mr. Wike’s term as Rivers governor, he previously held positions such as Commissioner and Special Adviser for Lands, Survey and Housing under his leadership.
The Chief Press Secretary of the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi responded firmly by stating that there would be no relocation of the REC. He advised PDP to prioritize their attention on the election process rather than Onuoha.
There will be no redeployment of the REC for Edo State, and instead the governorship election will take place on September 21st, 2024 in a total of 4,519 polling units rather than at the office of the REC.
Similarly, the respective Presiding Officers will announce polling unit outcomes following voting, ballot sorting and counting procedures in the company of authorized party agents and other interested parties.
