INEC expresses confidence that the ongoing investigation will result in the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this atrocious act.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the commission, conveyed these sentiments during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
He extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of INEC to the Army, armed forces, security agencies, intelligence services, law enforcement bodies, ICCES members, and the families of the deceased soldiers for the immense loss suffered.
Yakubu highlighted the commission’s engagement with stakeholders in the first quarterly consultative meeting of the year, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with security agencies.
He recalled the previous meeting held in January to review security arrangements for bye-elections and re-run elections in various constituencies, noting the successful conclusion of most elections except for a few disrupted by criminal elements.
INEC is now focused on finalizing the outstanding elections and preparing for the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, following the release of the electoral timetable last year.
