INEC Closes Campaigns as Edo Governorship Election Approaches

INEC has officially closed campaign activities ahead of the upcoming Edo governorship election, signaling the final stage before voters head to the polls. Learn more about the next steps.

Campaigns for the 2024 Edo governorship election have been officially closed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Sam Olumekun, INEC’s Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee and National Commissioner, announced this choice via a statement presented on Thursday, September 19th in the year 2024.

By citing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for this election, Olumekun emphasized to all political parties that today’s deadline marks an end to any campaign activities beyond midnight.

Starting on September 19, 2024, all political parties in Edo State are prohibited from holding rallies, processions or engaging in media campaigns.

Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022 mandates the closure of campaigns, and stipulates penalties for any breaches.

Candidates and their supporters are forbidden from exhibiting any campaign materials or wearing related attire at polling stations on Election Day, which takes place on Saturday, September 21st of the year 2024.
