According to Professor Jideofor Adibe, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu should have resigned following the 2023 elections due to the heavy criticism received by the electoral process.
Adibe believes that INEC has lost credibility among Nigerians and that stepping aside would have been the appropriate action to take in order to preserve the integrity of the institution. Despite feeling that he had done his best, Adibe argues that when international and local observers condemn and heavily criticize the election, stepping aside is necessary for the sake of the institution’s integrity.
