The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has successfully uploaded over 88% of the polling unit result sheets from the Edo State Governorship Election, held on Saturday, to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV). By 06:40 pm, the results from 3995 out of 4519 polling units were available online.
The election, conducted on September 21, 2024, was aimed at choosing a new governor to replace the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, whose term concludes on November 12, 2024. Edo is among the eight Nigerian states where governorship elections occur off-season due to legal disputes and court rulings. The other states include Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo.

INEC reports that Edo State has 2,629,025 registered voters and 4,519 polling units. Of these voters, 2,249,780 (85.57%) possess Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and have the right to determine Obaseki’s successor.
Although 17 candidates are vying for the governorship, analysts suggest the race will primarily be between Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
Olumide Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), is endorsed by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, who amassed substantial support in the previous election. Asue Ighodalo, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), has gained the support of incumbent Governor Obaseki, who decided against endorsing his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Both Shaibu and former governor Adams Oshiomhole have thrown their weight behind the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo.
Regarding party strongholds, the APC holds significant influence with current senators from Edo North (Oshiomhole) and Edo Central (Okpebholo), while the Labour Party’s senator Neda Imasuen represents Edo South, Akpata’s base.
