INEC has successfully uploaded more than 98% of the Edo election results to its IReV platform, providing transparency and real-time updates. Explore the latest progress on the election results.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has successfully uploaded more than 98% of the result sheets from polling units for the Edo State Governorship Election held on Saturday to the commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
As of 2:00 AM on Sunday, results from 4,435 out of 4,519 polling units have been made available on the portal. On September 21, 2024, the citizens of Edo State in South-South Nigeria participated in the election to select a new governor, succeeding the current officeholder, Godwin Obaseki, whose two-term tenure will conclude on November 12, 2024.
Edo State is among eight states conducting off-season governorship elections due to legal disputes and court rulings, alongside Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo. INEC reports a total of 2,629,025 registered voters and 4,519 polling units in the state, with 2,249,780 individuals (85.57%) possessing Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) eligible to vote for Obaseki’s successor.

While 17 candidates are competing for the governorship position, analysts have characterized the election as primarily a contest among three key candidates: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), enjoys strong backing from Peter Obi, the 2023 LP presidential candidate, who garnered over six million votes last year through the ‘Obidient’ movement. Ighodalo, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), has received the endorsement of the incumbent governor, Obaseki, who has opted to support him over his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Shaibu, along with former governor Adams Oshiomhole, has pledged allegiance to Okpebholo.
In terms of party influence, the APC currently holds senatorial positions in Edo North (Oshiomhole) and Edo Central (Okpebholo), while the Labour Party’s senator, Neda Imasuen, represents Edo South, the region from which Akpata originates.
