A Republican congressman has taken action against President Joe Biden by filing articles of impeachment due to his decision to withhold weapons deliveries to Israel.
The congressman deliberately used the same language that the Democrats had used to impeach former President Donald Trump.
President Biden had stated that if Israel proceeded with its plans to attack Rafah City in south Gaza, the US would not provide them with weapons and artillery shells.
Republicans were quick to highlight the Democrats’ accusation of Trump’s “abuse of power” when he allegedly withheld congressionally approved military aid in 2019. Representative Cory Mills of Florida criticized Biden for pressuring Israel, a key ally in the Middle East, by pausing their approved funding in the House unless they ceased all operations with Hamas. Mills referred to this as a clear case of “quid pro quo” and expressed his intention to impeach Biden.
On Friday, Mills followed through on his threat by formally initiating the impeachment procedure in the US House of Representatives. Mills accused Biden of violating his oath and abusing the powers of his office by seeking a “quid pro quo” with Israel and using vital military aid as leverage for policy changes.
A photo was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by someone, displaying the exact same language used by Rep. Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat, when he criticized Trump five years ago.
Back then, the Democrats, who had control over the House of Representatives, impeached Trump through a party-line vote, accusing him of abusing his power.
They alleged that Trump had threatened to delay the delivery of weapons to Ukraine unless they investigated a prosecutor who was looking into a company that had employed Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden.
Although Biden had openly admitted to getting the prosecutor fired, the Democrats argued that this constituted “election interference” as Biden was running for the Democrats’ 2020 presidential nomination.
However, the impeachment did not progress any further as the Republican-majority Senate refused to convict Trump in February 2020. Presently, the Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, but they have been largely ineffective in opposing the Democrats’ priorities. Even if Mills manages to persuade the House to impeach Biden, it is highly probable that he will be acquitted in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
