Dabiet Onyemi Gilbert, an immigration officer, was sentenced to one year in prison by the Gombe State High Court for cheating a job applicant out of N800,000.
Gilbert was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a single count of gaining by false pretence.
After the victim filed a petition, the EFCC looked into the matter and prosecuted the fraudster, finding him guilty.
Gilbert was sentenced by State High Court Judge H.H. Kereng.

In a similar event, Saleh Haruna was given a five-year prison sentence for forgery and intent to defraud by Justice Muazu Abubakar of the Bauchi State High Court.
Haruna was charged with planning to scam a victim out of N950,000 by pretending to be a land seller with a man named Mohammed Mustapha Sallah.
Mohammed Mustapha Sallah, Haruna’s purported accomplice, has also been charged by the EFCC with three counts of conspiracy, forgery, and intent to defraud.
The hearing in his case has been postponed until July 8, 2024.
