Segun Sowunmi, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his disappointment with some of the party’s founding fathers for not taking action to resolve the ongoing conflicts within the party.
He specifically mentioned former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, stating that he expected them to intervene and address the issues before the 2023 elections.
Sowunmi highlighted the recent calls for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, by some PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives. These lawmakers accused Damagum of working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and questioned why the party leadership remained silent on the political situation in Rivers State.
Sowunmi attributed the internal strife within the party to the “Wike problem,” referring to the ongoing conflict with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike. He expressed his sadness that these issues have persisted beyond the 2023 presidential poll and called on the founding fathers of the party to step in and reconcile the warring factions to strengthen the party’s position.
Sowunmi emphasized that the PDP, as a 25-year-old institution, should be a legacy that showcases Nigeria’s ability to govern effectively. He expressed his disappointment that the founding fathers are seemingly ignoring the party’s struggles and allowing it to suffer.
