VIDEO: Illegal miners responsible for the Ibadan explosion — Seyi Makinde
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has disclosed that the explosion in the state capital was a result of the criminal activities of illegal miners.
He stated that two individuals have tragically lost their lives, while 77 others have been injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 16th, at approximately 7.44pm, causing panic and confusion in various parts of the state capital.
Governor Makinde, along with state government officials, visited the affected area and explained that the explosion had caused both casualties and damage to properties in the vicinity. According to a release shared on his verified social media page, the explosion was caused by explosives stored in a house by illegal miners.
The governor expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and urged residents to remain calm and avoid the immediate scene of the incident to allow for uninterrupted rescue operations. He assured the public that the state government would provide adequate support to the victims and those who lost their properties.
The governor also mentioned that investigations by security agencies are ongoing, and anyone found responsible for the incident will be held accountable. In response to any emergencies, residents were advised to call the designated emergency hotline.
The state government has deployed earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel to the scene of the incident.
The injured individuals are being treated and transferred to both public and private hospitals in Ibadan, with medical personnel ready to provide necessary assistance. Governor Makinde also visited the University College Hospital (UCH) to personally see some of the injured individuals.
