The ‘Special Intervention Squad’ was launched by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, in an effort to combat the increasing rate of kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The team consists of specially trained mobile police officers who will provide swift responses to security breaches in the FCT.
Egbetokun emphasized that the squad will actively engage in community policing and assured Nigerians that similar squads will be established in neighboring states to tackle the issue of insecurity.
The recent abduction of six siblings and their father in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja on January 3, 2024, sparked outrage.
The kidnappers tragically killed one of the sisters, Nabeehah, after their parents failed to meet the N60 million ransom demand. In response to this incident, the IGP called for intensified efforts to combat kidnappers and other criminals in the nation’s capital. Additionally, President Bola Tinubu expressed his concern over the recent wave of kidnappings and bandit attacks in the FCT and other parts of the country, describing it as disturbing, ungodly, and sinister.
The President assured that security agencies are taking immediate action and that comprehensive resources, policies, and plans will soon be implemented to educate Nigerian youths on the matter.
