The Inspector General of Police alleges that recent fainting incidents by suspects in court were orchestrated to attract sympathy and media focus, sparking debate on courtroom conduct.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has claimed that the fainting incidents involving six suspects in court before their arraignment were staged to generate negative publicity.

Egbetokun stressed that medical assistance was promptly given, underscoring the police’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of individuals in custody.

On Friday, 76 suspects, most of whom are minors and appeared malnourished, were presented in court on charges related to the #EndBadGovernance protest. During proceedings, six of these minors collapsed and had to be taken out for immediate medical care.

After the arraignment, bail was set at N10 million for each minor, leading to criticism both locally and internationally.

In a November 1 statement issued on Saturday by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi for the IGP, Egbetokun emphasized that according to Nigerian law, all individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are held accountable for their actions, irrespective of their age.

He stated, “Today in court, an unforeseen event occurred when six suspects abruptly dashed out and fainted. This appeared to be a deliberate act designed to attract negative media attention.”

He added, “These individuals received immediate medical attention, highlighting the Police Force’s dedication to ensuring the welfare of those in its custody, regardless of the accusations against them.”

He also mentioned that the police are committed to balancing justice with compassion, particularly for young people, while maintaining accountability in accordance with international standards.

Egbetokun remarked, “This principle is consistent with international practices that hold young individuals accountable for serious offenses. In various jurisdictions like the United Kingdom, age does not absolve one from legal consequences. Nevertheless, each case is addressed with empathy and adherence to human rights standards.”

The suspects are reportedly facing charges that include serious offenses such as terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony. Additionally, they are accused of destroying public property and threatening national security.

“The NPF has recently brought 76 individuals to court, facing charges such as terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony. These grave accusations involve acts like the destruction of public property and threats to national security. The NPF has meticulously followed legal protocols in handling the detention and arraignment of these suspects to ensure fairness and accountability under the rule of law,” he stated.

Egbetokun encouraged the public to consider the case impartially, assuring that the police will maintain transparency and professionalism throughout the judicial proceedings.

He concluded, “The NPF recognizes the public’s interest in this case and assures everyone that our officers will act with professionalism throughout the legal proceedings. We urge the public to approach this matter without undue bias, as we continue to focus on a transparent pursuit of justice. The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to following best practices and upholding both law and respect for human dignity.”
