The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called on Igbo leaders to engage with the Federal Government in order to address their legitimate concerns.
During the launch of the Peace in the South East Project, which was initiated by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Abbas expressed his disappointment over the losses incurred due to the agitations in the South-East region, despite its economic strength.
He emphasized that peace in the South-East is crucial for the progress and prosperity of the entire nation.
Abbas further highlighted the significance of the project, stating that it was born out of his deputy’s love for the region and deep concern regarding the rising insecurity that has negatively impacted the area.
He acknowledged the resourcefulness and economic prowess of the Igbo people, emphasizing their entrepreneurial spirit and their cities’ industrialization.
A significant portion of the major investments in various regions of Nigeria are owned by the Igbo people.
The undeniable contributions of the Igbo community to the Nigerian economy can be seen through their involvement in imports, business investments, and remittances from the diaspora. These contributions extend beyond the economy and encompass various fields such as literature, academia, and the creative industry.
However, despite the natural resources available in the South-East region, it has faced challenges in the form of separatist movements, unrest, and terrorism.
The Speaker emphasized the need to comprehend the underlying causes of these issues in order to effectively address them and mitigate the immense impact they have had on lives and property.
