Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says that the government that came before the late Abiola Ajimobi stole money that was supposed to be used to build the Ido-Eruwa road.
This was said by Makinde in Eruwa town.
According to Obasanjonews24, Makinde took over as governor of the state on May 29, 2019, succeeding Ajimobi, who served the state for two eight-year terms in a row.
Ajimobi passed away in the year 2020, amid the height of the recent global coronavirus pandemic.
Our correspondent found out that Ido-Eruwa Road is the only way to get from the Ibarapa geopolitical zone to Ibadan, the capital of the state.
However, Makinde, who took office on May 29, 2019, has accused the previous administration of embezzling funds allocated for the road’s development.
Makinde said this at a stakeholders and town hall meeting at Eruwa Town Hall in the Ibarapa East local government area.
Makinde claimed that the Chinese Global Business, to which the project had been granted, quickly shut down and fled the site after the death of the former governor.
But he insisted that his administration had to re-award the road and start from scratch.
The governor said that as soon as he was elected, he got in touch with the contractor and paid 30% to fix the road from Igboora to Eleko-kan.
He made it clear that he told the outgoing governor not to give him the money back because it belonged to the state.
“You brought up the road from Ido to Eruwa, and I can confirm that the money for the project was stolen by the previous government,” Makinde said.
“I called them when I took office and even begged the late former governor Ajimobi not to give the money back to me because it belonged to Oyo State,” the governor said.
