The soldiers who were killed by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have now been identified, according to the military high command.
The incident took place at the Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area, near Aba metropolis in Abia State.
The soldiers who lost their lives include two sergeants, two corporals, and one lance corporal.
Their names are Sergeant Charles Ugochukwu (94NA/38/1467), Sergeant Bala Abraham (03NA/53/1028), Corporal Gideon Egwe (10NA/65/7085), Corporal Ikpeama Ikechukwu (13NA/70/5483), and Corporal Augustine Emmanuel (13NA/70/6663). In addition to the loss of lives, the assailants also stole five AK-47 rifles, set fire to two military patrol Hilux vehicles, and injured two civilians.
On the morning of May 30th, at around 8:30 AM, a distressing incident took place. It is believed that approximately 30 individuals, suspected to be members of IPOB/ESN, launched an attack on the 144 Battalion stationed at Obikabia Junction Federal School Road, Ogbor Hill in Obingwa LGA. The assailants arrived at the troops’ location in three black Toyota Land Cruiser Jeeps and initiated gunfire, tragically resulting in the loss of five soldiers’ lives.
As per a report, a communication from the Nigerian military indicated that the attackers managed to seize five AK47 rifles, destroy two military patrol hilux vehicles, and cause injuries to two innocent civilians before making their escape from the scene.
The situation in Aba remains tense, and authorities are diligently monitoring the area while awaiting further updates and developments.
