Idam urges Tinubu to raise minimum wage to N100,000 due to lack of interest in political statements by Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has not demonstrated enough concern for the well-being of Nigerian workers, according to human rights activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam, who emphasised that the minimum salary need to be N100,000.

Offering N62,000 as the new national minimum wage, according to Idam, demonstrates Tinubu’s lack of concern for the well-being of employees.

The Nigerian government and organised labour are still in negotiations.

Labour lowered its initial demand from N494,000 to N250,000 while the Nigerian government provided N62,000 instead.

Tinubu has pledged to present a minimum wage bill to the National Assembly during the negotiations.

But in an interview with Obasanjonews.com, Idam stated: “The President has not shown himself to be a leader who cares about the well-being of his employees. The demands made by the government and labour are clearly very different from one another. The labour cut from N494,000 to N250,000 is accompanied by an offer of N62,000 from the President. I thought the President would come to their aid. Instead of mentioning N62,000, I thought Mr. President would be discussing N100,000 and higher.

“I recognise that state governors are genuinely causing a backlog by claiming that their budgets cannot keep up with demand, but this is the moment for the President to demonstrate his leadership and his willingness for employees to succeed under his watch.
