Ibadan Stampede Claims 35 Minors: Ooni’s Ex-Wife Arrested Over Alleged Involvement
Tragedy strikes in Ibadan as a stampede claims the lives of 35 minors. Ooni’s ex-wife is arrested for her alleged connection to the incident, raising serious concerns.
A stampede at a funfair at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan has resulted in the tragic deaths of 35 minors.
The incident that occurred on Wednesday received widespread condemnation, including from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who promised to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Makinde also stated that the state government would apprehend those responsible for the incident and expressed condolences to the parents of children involved in the stampede.
The day following the incident, the State Police Command reported that seven individuals had been arrested for their involvement in the disaster.
The Command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, reported that the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; Fasasi Abdulahi, Principal of Islamic High School in Ibadan; and six additional individuals are being held by police.
The statement indicated that the former queen was designated as the principal sponsor of the event.
Osifeso stated that the Oyo State Police Command wants to inform the citizens of the state that eight individuals have already been arrested for their respective involvements.
The individuals involved are the main event sponsor, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola (female), age 31; Fasasi Abdulahi (male), age 56, who is the School Principal at Islamic High School in Ibadan; Genesis Christopher (male), age 24; Tanimowo Moruf (male), age 52; Anisolaja Olabode (male), age 42; Idowu Ibrahim (male), age 35; and Abiola Oluwatimilehin (male),age25.
The Command’s spokesperson also reported that six individuals have been injured and are undergoing treatment at a medical facility.
He added, “To date, 35 minors have been reported dead and six others are critically injured and receiving various medical treatments.”
According to Osifeso, the case has been moved to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, where it is now being led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for overseeing investigations.
He urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that they would notice increased patrols and a strong police presence aimed at preventing any hoodlums from exploiting the unfortunate situation.
