Popular Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has said that his 1999 campaigning for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State, was a mistake.

In response to accusations that he had supported the All Progressives Congress, or APC, presidential candidate, Seun made this claim in a viral video posted on his Instagram page.

Seun, the youngest son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the father of Afrobeat music, claimed he was “young and naive” when he ran for Tinubu, the then-governor of Lagos.

“I ran for Tinubu in 1999 because I knew him through my late father,” he claimed. Politically, I was Yoruba. I was a fool back then, so Yoruba would be liberated from Nigeria. I was a child. What I could see, I trusted.

“I didn’t simply remain in that position of privilege believing that, since I know Tinubu, I have arrived. I kept reading, learning, and honing my political awareness.

“We must continue in a specific way to work and get more knowledgeable if honestly we are all striving for the greatest way to be. Therefore, as I studied more, I came to the conclusion that these politicians were not who they claimed to be.

Immediately after realising that what was going on there was fake and self-serving because it no longer matched my political consciousness, I walked away.
