Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr, who is nominated for a Grammy, has talked candidly about her experience with writer’s block and its effects.
The “Rush” singer claimed that she was unable to compose music for roughly six months until a friend gave her the song demo for “21,” which is off her new album “The Year I Turned 21.” This demo allowed her to start writing again.
“I received the ’21’ demo as a birthday present from a friend on my 21st birthday,” she revealed in a widely shared podcast interview.

“I told him it’s been really difficult,” I experienced writer’s block for half a year. When I was unable to write about myself, he sent me a demo of the song as a birthday present. I recorded “21” in one take, so it wasn’t too difficult for me. Even so, I was on my back holding the microphone.
“’21’ holds special significance as it was the album that introduced me to the rest of it.” I was able to view myself the way I wanted to see myself once more with “21.”
