Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has spoken out about how sexual harassment almost caused her to quit the Nigerian film industry.
As she described her challenges during her ascent to the top, the actress made this revelation.
Despite getting the part in a forthcoming movie, Aigbe talked about how a producer approached her during a movie audition in an interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown on the TVC chat show “Your View.”
“In Surulere, I met a producer and told him how much I wanted to be an actor. He summoned me to his office for an audition and informed me that he was working on a movie.
“I told him that wasn’t the character I was auditioning for, and he replied that the director said he didn’t know me, which is why he wanted me to be close to him,” the woman said after passing the first three rounds of the audition.
Then he got up to give me a hug. I was furious and decided I no longer wanted to be an actress if that was what it required to be one. I walked out, tearing up the script. I was already a single mother when I quit a well-paying career to join Nollywood, so I sobbed on my way home.
