The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded Chimamanda Chukwudum be given more power.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, is in awe of the incredible tenacity and fortitude displayed by Chimamanda Chukwudum, a young woman from Oko, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State.

“Her tale is one of unyielding hope, willpower, and potential as well as one of suffering. Today, we demand that the federal ministers of trade, industry, and women’s affairs take action to enable this little girl to realise her full potential, according to a statement released by HURIWA on Wednesday and signed by its national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko.

Chimamanda’s journey began in Lagos, where she was born and raised, the rights organisation claims. Her mother worked as an insurance broker, while her father was a prosperous businessman. But three years ago, their world saw a terrible shift. Her father, Mr. Eric Onyejinaka, suffered a significant economic failure and was afflicted with kidney-related illnesses. Chimamanda’s mother, Mrs. Benita Chukwudum, stepped up as the family’s only provider in the face of these difficulties, taking on the significant financial load of her husband’s medical care and taking on the role of the household’s breadwinner. Sadly, this caused her kids to stop attending school.

“Chimamanda, the oldest of four children, showed extraordinary fortitude and tenacity at the age of barely ten. She was aware of her capacity for quick learning and aspired to develop new abilities. She was determined, took just six months to learn how to make pillows, and then started working to help her family. In order to make sure her siblings could attend school, she matched this with continuing her education, frequently switching terms and taking extra classes to catch up.

“Despite the overwhelming obstacles, Chimamanda showed tremendous strength and intelligence. She finished her junior secondary education at the age of 12, which is remarkable given her circumstances.

“Getting to know Chimamanda is proof of her relentless spirit. She never loses her optimism and insists that she will triumph despite her obstacles. Her main demands have been for strong product demand and assistance in acquiring more equipment and tools to boost her output.

“In honour of International Girl Child Day, we request that the governor of Anambra State, the federal ministers of trade, industry, and women’s issues, as well as the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, adopt Chimamanda and provide her with scholarships up to the university level, either jointly or individually. We can actually empower her to be a light of hope and resiliency by giving her the conditions she needs to increase her output and the chance to mentor other young talents.

“Chimamanda Chukwudum’s story serves as a reminder of the enormous potential that exists within our young females. We must make sure that her dreams are realised and that her abilities are developed. Let’s work together to lift up and empower Chimamanda and the countless other women like her on this International Girl Child Day.
