The UN Refugee Agency has issued a warning that over 25 million individuals in Sudan are currently facing a humanitarian crisis due to ongoing conflict in the country.
On a daily basis, thousands of refugees are fleeing the clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with the majority seeking refuge in South Sudan.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that the total number of displaced individuals has surpassed 8.5 million, with 1.8 million of them crossing borders.
Marie-Helene Verney, the UNHCR representative in South Sudan, emphasized the severity of the crisis by comparing it to the arrival of 4.5 million people in Germany or 17.6 million people in the United States in less than a year.
In March, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that nearly half of Sudan’s population is in urgent need of food and medical assistance.
The conflict between the SAF and RSF, which began in mid-April of the previous year, has resulted in the deaths of at least 14,600 people and injuries to 26,000 others across the nation over the course of 11 months.
