General Yakubu Gowon reveals his efforts to prevent General Sani Abacha from executing former President Olusegun Obasanjo during Nigeria’s military regime.

Retired General Yakubu Gowon, a former Head of State, revealed his role in intervening to stop the execution of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo during the late General Sani Abacha’s regime.

At the first Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, hosted by the Plateau State Government, Gowon shared how he intervened to save Obasanjo after his conviction for allegedly participating in a coup plot against Abacha in 1995.

Gowon mentioned that he composed a letter to Abacha, urging him to recognize that God appointed him as a leader for the purpose of doing good rather than harm. He sent his wife with the message in the dead of night to deliver it personally in Abuja, appealing to Abacha not to let such events transpire.

Obasanjo, who insisted on his innocence, was initially given a death sentence which was later reduced to imprisonment. He spent three years in custody before being released in 1998 after Abacha’s unexpected passing. In 1999, Obasanjo became Nigeria’s democratically elected president.

Looking back on the events, Gowon expressed his gratitude for how things turned out. “I’m pleased that shortly after those times, circumstances changed; not only was Obasanjo released from prison, but he also became our president in 1999. Such a transformation can be attributed to prayers and sincerity alone. I’m delighted that today both Obasanjo and I are here to celebrate Plateau’s unity,” he remarked.

The event, organized to promote unity and peace in Plateau State, featured Obasanjo as the Guest of Honour and Gowon as the Special Guest of Honour.

Gowon also praised Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for organizing the carol, highlighting its importance in fostering peaceful coexistence in a state that has experienced several security challenges.

“This event serves as a testament to the strength of faith and unity, offering a platform for people to unite in harmony,” Gowon added.

Governor Mutfwang was praised for his initiatives designed to promote peace and unity throughout the state.
