On the Lagos-Ibadan motorway, the House of Representatives has requested that the Federal Government build pedestrian bridges at key intersections.

Representative Tolulope Akande-Sadipe of the All Progressives Congress Party, who represents the Oluyole Federal Constituency, made a motion at plenary that led to the resolution.

This is stated in a statement that Mr. Olamilekan Olusada, Akande-Sadipe’s Special Assistant on Media, released and provided to journalists on Thursday in Abuja.

The motion emphasised Ibadan’s extraordinary rise, which has made it the third-largest city in the world as of late, according to UN statistics.

According to her, this is in reaction to the serious safety risks that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway’s lack of pedestrian bridges poses.

The Federal Ministry of Works was requested by Akande-Sadipe to give pedestrian bridge construction first priority along this crucial corridor.

The Lagos-Ibadan Motorway is now a necessary route for everyday operations because it passes through densely populated areas of the city.

But the safety of both automobiles and pedestrians has been underestimated due to the lack of pedestrian bridges.

People trying to cross the highway to get to markets, homes, offices, and schools are reporting alarmingly high rates of deadly incidents every day, the spokesperson added.

With profound concern, Akande-Sadipe underlined that pedestrian bridges were disregarded during the Lagos-Ibadan expressway’s development, despite constant safety lobbying.

Sadly, the route has become a “death trap,” as she puts it.

She clarified that the proposal acknowledged the significance of building pedestrian bridges at particular sites.

The Technical University, the Toll Gate in Ibadan, Félele, Sóka, Sanyo, Bólúwaji, Academy, and Eléruku are among the spots, according to her.

Akande-Sadipe asserts that these bridges are essential to preserving the economic sustainability of these densely populated areas, saving lives, and lessening the pain of commuters, particularly schoolchildren.

She asked the Federal Ministry of Works to include funding in the 2024 budget estimates for the construction of pedestrian bridges in the aforementioned sites.

She asked the House Committee on Works and Appropriations to make sure that these vital safety precautions are strictly adhered to. (NAN)
