Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, emphasized the importance of addressing issues such as greed, selfishness, and envy over other sins during a virtual Ramadan lecture titled “Some dimensions of the concept of ibadah”.
He pointed out that social disorder in Nigeria is partly due to Muslims forgetting that they will be held accountable for their actions by God.
Sanusi highlighted the discrepancy between outward religious practices like prayers and fasting and the prevalence of evil deeds, attributing it to the lack of Islamic values in people’s hearts.
The former CBN governor also called out a governor from a Sharia-implementing state for embezzling funds to purchase a hotel in Lagos, emphasizing that such actions contribute to the backwardness of the state.

Sanusi stressed that if leaders were mindful of being answerable for the trust placed in them, they would refrain from corrupt practices.
He reiterated that the sins of the heart, such as greed and envy, are more significant than outward sins like illegal sexual activities or gambling, and that focusing on internal virtues is crucial for a just society.
