According to prominent rapper Tochukwu Ojogwu, well known by his stage name Odumodublvck, Nigerians don’t value the hip-hop genre or its artists.

In a recent interview with the CTRL Room, the singer of “Declan Rice” recalled how, when he was a fledgling artist, organisers didn’t offer him seats at award ceremonies.

He also described how he declined his team’s advice to join up with afrobeats singer Davido in order to become famous.

Instead, he claimed, he was drawn to UK grime artists whose style complemented his own.

In 2019, someone [in my team] suggested that we visit Lagos and see Davido, according to Odumodublvck. However, I was thinking, “What can Davido do for me? Even if Davido brought me to America and had me perform on stage while I was rapping, his afrobeats-loving followers wouldn’t get it.

Teezee, BOJ, and Sholz, however, are the conduits to the UK market. And those are the guys I most closely resemble on a global scale. Therefore, why don’t I use that path to reach my destination?

“I was thinking that I no longer needed Davido for anything. Let me follow those who share my vision. And that’s how we met and got to where we are right now. Despite all odds, the country’s number one position. Inform them that they must respect that object. since we didn’t even have seats when we went to an award event. Hip-hop is hardly respected in Nigeria. They show no respect for us.

However, the rapper said that he agreed with Wizkid’s contentious claim that “hip-hop is gone,” adding, “I was quite delighted about Wizkid’s comments… Hip-hop was no longer.
