Severe rainfall in Nigeria has resulted in at least 6 deaths and displaced 10,000 people, causing widespread damage and prompting urgent relief efforts.

On Monday, flooding in northern Nigeria caused the displacement of at least 10,000 individuals from 11 communities and resulted in the death of six people.

The recent floods in Adamawa State have caused concern among officials due to their susceptibility to flooding. With the rainy season still yet to reach its peak, it has led to rivers like the Benue overflowing and resulting in extensive inundation of communities, farmlands as well as infrastructure.

Adamawa State Deputy Governor Kaletapwa Farauta stated that the floods arrived earlier than anticipated, taking many individuals by surprise, owing to climate change and numerous other factors.

She stated that typically, September is when we mentally prepare for floods and not August, even if there’s a possibility of it occurring.

On Wednesday, the state government admitted that the flood may not have been more severe than in past years. However, they advised individuals residing in low-lying regions along Benue River to relocate to one of eight displacement camps established with coordinated efforts from National Emergency Management Agency.

The year 2022 marked Nigeria’s most awful flood in over ten years, which resulted in the death of more than six hundred people and forced approximately 1.4 million individuals to evacuate their homes while also damaging farmland covering an area exceeding four hundred thousand hectares.
