Yakubu Lucky, a 31-year-old motorcyclist, was killed in a severe downpour on Friday night at Dogon Gada in the Lokogoma District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The deceased disobeyed warnings, drove into a pool of water, and drowned, according to the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which verified the tragedy in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

The deceased disobeyed warnings from the neighbourhood divers that FEMA had stationed there, according to the statement, which was signed by the agency’s head of public affairs, Mrs. Nkechi Isa.

It was also stated that the deceased passed through a roadblock set up by the agency to prevent locals from walking into the rising water.

The statement further stated that the body of the dead was found on Saturday by the FEMA Search and Rescue Team, under the direction of Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, the Director of Forecasting Response and Mitigation.

It added that a doctor at the Asokoro District Hospital confirmed his demise after the body was delivered there.

The statement continued, “The body of the deceased, who was from Zango Kataf, Kaduna State, has since been taken away for burial.”

In response to the situation, Mr. Mohammed Sabo, interim Director-General of FEMA, urged locals to always follow the agency’s warnings.

Sani claimed that during intense downpours, the FEMA always constructs a roadblock at Dogon Gada.

He advised people to wait for the water to ebb or find an other route rather than driving into a pool of water.

Sabo expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family and urged locals to always dial the 112 emergency toll-free number in case of an emergency or calamity. (NAN)
