Lagos State Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi has said that testing have verified that the latest sickness outbreak in the state is caused by cholera, with a highly contagious and aggressive strain having been found.
On his X page on Monday, Abayomi said that the strain that was discovered might spread widely.
The commissioner said that the number of cases has peaked and is currently decreasing as a result of contact tracing and community-based case detection.

“Laboratory tests have confirmed that cholera is the cause of the outbreak,” he stated. The strain that has been found is extremely contagious and aggressive, and it has the potential to spread widely.
“The outbreak’s epicentre is Lagos Island, with 106 suspected cases, according to the geographical distribution of suspected cases by Local Government Area. Kosofe has 49 cases, Eti-Osa has 38, Lagos Mainland has 30, Ojo has 17, Ikorodu has 16, Shomolu has 11, Surulere has 9, Apapa has 8, Mushin has 8, Ifako Ijaiye has 8, Alimosho has 4, Ajeromi-Ifelodun has 4, Oshodi-Isolo has 3, Ikeja has 3, Oshodi-Isolo has 3, Ikeja has 3, Ibeju Lekki has 2, Badagry has 2, and Amuwo-Odofin has one.
“350 suspected cases of cholera were reported in 29 wards across multiple LGAs in Lagos State,” Abayomi continued. “Severe dehydration caused by delayed presentation was the cause of 15 fatalities and 17 confirmed cases of cholera.”
