In a resolute address, Vice President Kamala Harris promises a peaceful transfer of power to Donald Trump, emphasizing the importance of democratic values. Read more on her speech and its significance.

Defeated Democratic candidate and US Vice President Kamala Harris assured a peaceful transition of power to Donald Trump on Wednesday during her defiant concession speech, encouraging supporters to “keep fighting” for their ideals.

“We have to acknowledge the outcomes of this election. Earlier today, I called President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his win,” Harris stated during a speech at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington.

I also mentioned that we will assist him and his team with their transition process, ensuring a smooth and peaceful transfer of power.

Without referencing Trump’s unwillingness to acknowledge his loss to President Joe Biden in 2020, Harris emphasized that respecting election outcomes is what “sets democracy apart from monarchy or tyranny. Anyone who seeks the public trust must uphold it.”

She added, “In our nation, we should pledge loyalty not to a president or a political party but to the Constitution of the United States, as well as to our conscience and God.”

Before an enthusiastic crowd, Harris began by encouraging her supporters to continue advocating for their ideas despite the deep disappointment they felt following Trump’s decisive victory the previous day.

She stated, “The result of this election is not what we desired, not what we worked towards, nor what we voted for. However, believe me when I say that the light of America’s promise will always shine brightly as long as we never give up and continue to fight.”

Following a campaign where she consistently cautioned against the threats Trump posed to American democracy, she concluded by acknowledging the unease experienced by many of her supporters.

“I understand that many people feel we might be entering a challenging period, but I sincerely hope that’s not true for the benefit of everyone,” she remarked.

“But here’s the point: America, if it’s possible, let’s illuminate the sky with a billion brilliant stars—the light of optimism, faith, truth, and service,” she added.
